Matcha has gained great popularity in recent years – and for good reason. The Japanese green tea not only has a beautiful color and a rich taste, but also a naturally high content of antioxidants. Especially in the summer months, iced matcha has become a favorite among tea lovers, and it is actually both easy and quick to make yourself.

In this post, we’ll take a closer look at what matcha really is, why it’s become so popular – and how you can make your own refreshing iced matcha at home.

What is Matcha?

Matcha is made from fresh green Tencha tea, which – like Gyokuro – is shade-grown for 20 days before harvest. The tea leaves are steamed and dried alternately before they are gently ground into the characteristic fine green powder.

Unlike regular green tea, where the leaves are simply steeped in water, drinking the whole leaf is drunk when drinking matcha – which provides a more concentrated nutritional content and a richer taste experience.

Matcha has been an important part of Japanese tea ceremony for centuries, and the tea is associated with calmness, presence, and sensuality. The taste is characteristic: slightly bitter, creamy and with a soft umami body.

What is iced matcha?

Iced matcha is matcha served cold – often with ice cream and sometimes with milk or syrup. It’s a refreshing and modern way to enjoy tea, especially during the summer period. The cold serving highlights the fresh, green hues of the tea and provides a creamy, cool drink that both invigorates and refreshes.

Recipe: How to make iced matcha at home

It doesn’t take much equipment to make iced matcha – just a few ingredients and a few minutes.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp good quality matcha (about 1–2 grams)

  • 1 dl hot water (approx. 80°C)

  • Ice

  • 1–2 dl cold water or plant-based milk (e.g. oat or almond milk)

  • Possibly a little syrup or honey for sweetness

Approach:

  1. Strain the matcha into a bowl to avoid lumps.

  2. Add the hot water and beat the matcha with a bamboo whisk (chasen) or a milk frother until it is dissolved and foams lightly on the surface.

  3. Fill a glass with ice cubes.

  4. Pour the matcha over the ice cream and top with cold water or milk.

  5. If necessary, season with a little syrup or honey.

Serve immediately and enjoy the fresh, green taste.
