Perchs
The history of A.C. Perch's Tea Shop - the oldest tea shop in Europe (short version)
During the last part of the 18th century, business was booming in Christianshavn - a very old part of the city of Copenhagen. Due to the Danish company (Asiatisk Kompagni) which was situated here, many exiting items from south east Asia was brought to Denmark by ships, which docked in this part of the city. Naturally a great deal of retailers settled in this area, and the daily auctions established a solid marked.
The founder
Among these retailers was Jens Bay Perch, who supported by his good friend Niels Brock, opened his own shop in Christianhavn. His son was named after him and Niels Brock Perch became the founder of todays A.C. Perch's Tea shop.
Niels Brock Perch opened his little shop in Kronprinsensgade 5 in the year 1835, and it hasn't changed since. Naturally, the shop has been renovated since then, but apart from electric light and some staff, everything has stayed tea same.
The Hincheldey family takes over
The Perch family owned the shop until 1894, when the Hincheldey family took over. Today the 4th generation is in charge of the shop, and not seldom 3 generations operate behind the counter at the same time.
Because the shop is a family business, we have been able to serve our customers personally, - which means that the customers are familiar with the faces behind the counter. It is our deepest wish that the customers feel welcome here, and politeness and friendliness are some of our major deeds.
Today we are proud to have served 7 generations.
We are looking forward to welcoming you in our shop or in our webshop.
